From Immediate Relief to Long-Term Recovery: Supporting Meemure’s Children

When the devastating Ditwah floods struck Sri Lanka last December, SLAWDC focused its relief efforts on three critical stages: immediate emergency relief, post-disaster recovery, and long-term rebuilding and assistance.

This project represents the final stage of our Ditwah relief efforts—helping children rebuild their lives after the immediate attention, assistance, and donations following the disaster had slowed down.

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, the Sri Lanka Association of Washington DC (SLAWDC) used the remaining Ditwah Flood Relief Fund to support 176 students across three schools in Meemure, one of the communities deeply affected by the floods.

Meemure Kaikawala Kanishta Vidyalaya serves 138 students from Grades 1–11, while Meemure Prathamika Vidyalaya and Kumukgolla Prathamika Vidyalaya serve another 38 students from Grades 1–5. Together, these schools educate 176 students with the support of 22 dedicated teachers.

Although the schools received some initial assistance, many challenges remain. Some children walk long distances from areas without bus service, basic supplies are scarce, and the nearest major town, Kandy, is approximately 35 kilometers away—making transportation and access to essential resources costly and difficult.

To help these children begin the new school term with confidence and hope, each student received a new school bag filled with essential school supplies, along with a lunch box.

This initiative is about more than school supplies. It is about reminding these children and their families that they have not been forgotten—even after the immediate impact of the disaster has passed. As they continue rebuilding their lives, we are honored to stand beside them and invest in their education and future.
